About
My name is Matthew Dryden and I’m a writer, blogger, and spoken word poet who lives in Guelph, Ontario.
Blogging Back in the Day
In late 2008, I went through a very troublesome divorce. I was left with a large house and no one to share it with. With little else, I started updating this blog during the week. I found other up-and-coming bloggers and gained a bit of notoriety as a someone who pushed the envelope.
Back in those days, I described my blog’s content as: “struggles as a practicing writer, stream-of-conscious thought, and imagined conversations with other bloggers.”
Many of my posts related to my struggle as a single guy who hadn’t developed proper social skills. I also wrote a lot about an overwhelming feeling of loneliness. I was often praised for my brutal honesty and passion.
Guelph Spoken Word
It was November of 2008 that I competed my first poetry slam. I didn’t know it at the time but that night changed my life. Over the next few months, I started working with Beth Anne Fischer to set up the website for the Guelph Poetry Slam and would eventually become a member of the GSW team.
I spent most of 2009 developing my poetry and performance skills. I have been pegged as a love poet, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I’ve since performed at various poetry slams and readings, and have even organized and hosted another event, BlueWorks Erotica. I have also performed at the Eden Mills Writers’ Festival as part of the GPS 2009 Slam team and have lead a youth workshop on spoken word.
Writing with a Pulse?
If there is anything that I’ve done well in the past year, it has been writing with brutal honesty and passion. I have shared my stories about heartbreak, depression, and love.
Whether it’s on stage or online, words need to feel alive. They set the rhythm, they keep your readers engaged. Without a pulse, you’re dead.
